Devouring: Easy French Onion Soup

After an incredibly indulgent Valentine's Day dinner,
in which one of the courses involved the most delicious french onion soup ever made,
we found ourselves craving this rich comfort food even weeks later.

One especially cold February evening we improvised and
made our own easy version at home.
Easy French Onion Soup

2 tablespoons minced garlic
2 onions, sliced into thin rings
1 1/2 tablespoons butter
2 cans condensed beef broth
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 package au jus gravy mix
1 french baguette roll
8 slices Swiss cheese

1.In a small skillet over medium heat, cook garlic until just golden. Set aside.

2.In a skillet, cook sliced onions in butter, over medium low heat, until golden brown. Set aside.

3.Pour beef broth in a 2 quart saucepan. Add fried garlic, fresh ground pepper and sauteed onions. Bring the soup mixture to a boil and then simmer over low heat for 15 minutes. Stir in the packaged gravy mix and simmer for another 10 minutes.

4.Turn on oven broiler and divide soup evenly among 4 oven safe soup crocks. Place 1 baguette slice on the top of the soup followed by two slices of Swiss cheese on top of the baguette. Make sure that the cheese does not sink into the soup. Place soup crocks on a cookie sheet and place under the broiler. Broil until the cheese is golden brown and bubbling. Let cool slightly before serving.

This soup will warm you up right down to your soul.

The Boston Cooking-School Cookbook~1924

One of our most cherished mementos is this cookbook, 'The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book'.
The first copyright date is 1896.

The book was given to me by my aunt, but it was originally my great grandmother's. It is filled with her handwritten recipes, as well.
It contains the recipe for 'Mahogany Cake', my grandfather's favorite. He was an only child...who had 12 children of his own...the oldest boy, my dad.
The book has recipes that include directions such as 'bake in a moderate oven' without any times given. And these...
The hidden sisters would love to spend an afternoon having tea...
Or have good coffee after dinner...
We'd *love* to have a 'Chocolate Service'....
It also has wonderful advertisements in the back...
Do you have any recipes or cookbooks that are dear to you?

Spring...is Coming!

The hidden sisters were treated to an unexpected snow this week. We loved watching the gently falling flakes...and getting a break the from the routine of the week...
But most of all we loved seeing that spring is still right around the corner...

"Listen, can you hear it? Spring's sweet cantata. The strains of grass pushing through the snow. The song of buds swelling on the vine. The tender timpani of a baby robin's heart. Spring."

There is a Garden in Every Childhood...

We had a surprise this weekend...a sunny day nice enough to play outside in with our little ones...in February! Earlier this summer, we finished terracing our back garden. These are the rocks steps that lead to a grassy spot the little ones love to play on.
During a morning trip to the tile store for special order tiles for our fireplace, we stumbled upon the our Pratt & Larson's room of leftover tiles. For $5, our preschooler picked out tiles he loved and thought were beautiful. We had a wonderful idea in mind for them!
He chose some that were very 'unusual and special'...
We used a little grout and grey compound (as well as some help from dad)...
And with a little help from little hands...
And artistic direction as well...

We decorated our magical steps.
This little path, so often only seen by our little ones, will lead to many hours of magical play as the weather gets warmer and we are outside more.
“There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again.”

Nurture Yourself~With Chocolate...

When these long days of winter leave us feeling a little empty...it's nice to think of little ways to fill one's soul. Chocolate is the perfect treat.
We hidden sisters love *really good drinking chocolate* like this Chocolat en poudre arĂ´me Amande, brought back to us by a lovely mother-in-law from a recent trip to France.
We also love these wonderful (and wonderfully easy to make!) Chocolate-Cranberry Clusters. With just three ingredients, they can be made in a jiffy...and the dark chocolate and crunch do just the trick to satisfy even the deepest chocolate craving.
Yes, this little treat...warm hot chocolate and divine chocolate clusters are such a *sweet* way to take five minutes to indulge oneself...

Cranberry-Chocolate Clusters

3 cups cornflakes
1/2 cup dried cranberries
10 ounces bittersweet chocolate

Crush corn flakes in a plastic bag. In a microwave safe bowl, melt chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals, being sure not to overheat. When the chocolate is melted, stir in crushed corn flakes and cranberries. Drop by the spoonful onto waxed paper and refrigerate until firm. Enjoy!

Hint of Spring

On certain days when the wind blows just right...
or a small dash of color in the midst of gray catches our eye...
...it brings a hint of spring to the air...
almost as if we were peeking through a secret key hole...

...or just past a forbidden door...

...to catch a glimpse of what the near future holds for us.

So...until spring has officially taken off her winter cap and decided to stay awhile
we will continue to wrap our scarves a little tighter,
lean into the wind a little harder...

...and relish every little promise of spring we spot.

Are you counting down the days until spring just as eagerly as we are?

Devouring: Cuban Style Black Beans

A record breaking cold front is set to roll in this week.
We're staying warm with spicy cuban style black beans and cilantro lime rice.
Gina's Skinny Recipes never lead us astray.
Cuban Style Black Beans
2 tsp olive oil
1/2 onion

2 cloves garlic
2 scallions
2 tbsp red bell pepper
3 tbsp cilantro
15 oz can black bean, do not drain
1/2 cup water (or more if needed)
1 bay leaf
few pinches cumin (to taste)
pinch oregano
1 tsp red wine vinegar
salt and black pepper to taste

Chop onion, garlic, scallions, red pepper, and cilantro in a mini chopper of food processor.
Add oil to a medium-sized pot on medium heat. Add vegetables to the pot and saute until soft, about 3 minutes. Add beans, water, bay leaf, cumin, oregano, red wine vinegar, salt and black pepper and bring to a boil. Lower heat and cover, simmer about 15 minutes stirring occasionally (adjust water as needed). Taste for salt and serve.

Listening: Frightened Rabbit~Swim Until You Can't See Land

The hidden sisters love our escapes to the coast...and this song often reminds us of the reasons that draw us there.
"Dip a toe in the ocean. Oh how it hardens and it numbs.
The rest of me is a version of man, built to collapse into crumbs.
And if I hadn't come down to the coast to disappear,
I may have died in a landslide of rocks and hopes and fears."
{lyrics from Swim Until You Can't See Land by Frightened Rabbit}

Inspiration: Vivian Maier

"Vivian Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was an American amateur street photographer who was born in New York but grew up in France, and after returning to the U.S., worked for about forty years as a nanny in Chicago. During those years she took about 100,000 photographs, primarily of people and cityscapes most often in Chicago, although she traveled worldwide, taking pictures in each location...Her photographs remained unknown and mostly undeveloped until they were discovered by a local historian in 2007. Following Maier's death her work began to receive critical acclaim." {from wikipedia}

The hidden sisters just learned about this inspiring story...
In 2007, John Maloof bought a large box of prints and film from an abandoned storage locker and began to develop them. What he had discovered was Vivian Maier's life's work. Beautiful snapshots from the streets of New York, portraits, daily life, travels around the world...

This amazing story inspired us. Maier's beautiful photographs...and story...a photographer who never even developed her film...

Learn more about this story and see more of here work here:

This story reminds us of our goal of always creating for the sake of creating.

{Old Fashioned} Lemonade

Every winter at about this time we need a little lightening up.
A quick way to brighten up a dark winter day.  A simple reminder that spring is around the bend.
This old fashioned lemonade recipe did just the trick.

Maybe it's the fresh scent of tart lemons,
or that crisp pop of color they add to the fruit bowl.
Whatever it is, these little lemons provide the perfect hint of sunshine
to any drab winter day.

What you need
1 3/4 cups white sugar
8 cups water
1 1/2 cups lemon juice

What you do
1.In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 cup water.
Bring to boil and stir to dissolve sugar.
Allow to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until chilled.

2.Remove seeds from lemon juice, but leave pulp.
In pitcher, stir together chilled syrup, lemon juice and remaining 7 cups water.

3. Best enjoyed in a tall glass with your feet up.

Secret Heart

Isn't it amazing how sometimes the simplest, smallest gifts mean the most?
We are still soaking up all of the love spread around yesterday...
...with a fresh bouquet from Trader Joe's...
...and these secret {Valentine} hearts.

Yesterday, we hid five hearts around the house.
Each heart had a handwritten message filled with a reason we fell in love
with our honey.
We have to admit it felt a little like Christmas morning waking up to find a secret heart hidden inside a laptop, taped to a hallway mirror...and even one tucked inside a lunch bag that wasn't found until hours later.

The littlest ways to show love always end up being the biggest, don't they?

Are you still enjoying any valentine surprises from yesterday?

Inspiration: 'And I Shall Have Some Peace There'

The hidden sisters were so inspired by the story of Margaret Roach. In her own words, from her blog, A Way to Garden:
'IN DECEMBER 2007, I made the life-altering decision to walk away from New York City and my job as Editorial Director of Martha Stewart, a career many would describe as highly successful. But I craved completely different rewards: solitude, a return to the personal creativity of writing, and a closer connection to nature and my first passion, the garden I'd been making on weekends for 20 years. I moved to a rural New York State town of 300, began AWayToGarden.com (called “the best garden blog” by the New York Times and named for my prize-winning 1989 book), and wrote the dropout memoir “And I Shall Have Some Peace There” (February 2011). Today, I lecture and teach about what I call “horticultural how-to and woo-woo,” and help clients create websites on the WordPress platform.'
We are excited to get her book which comes out on Feb. 23rd, 2011! Her blog also has a great soundtrack to go along with her book!

Style: Cute Hair!

Sometimes the hidden sisters wished we live in a different era...and the glamour of the past, when women had weekly trips to a beauty salon to have someone else style their hair sounds so appealing. Though we don't live in California, we wished for a moment that we did when we learned about drybar. This beautiful salon does blowouts only {they will wash, dry and style} for $35. And ths includes a massage and a lovely drink, while you get styled...Why, thank you! We'd love one!

Drybar Overview from drybar on Vimeo.

We will be styling our own hair for an upcoming evening out on the town.
We found this lovely blog with a great tutorial {scroll down in the post for the great video} on doing the sweetest double braid look to wear with long waves.
Do you have any favorite ways of wearing your locks on special occasions?
